Known for his gift of spiritual writing, John M. Pontius desired above all one thing — pointing others to the Savior. He loved and gave his complete and unending support of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he remained in good standing all his life and always retained a temple recommend.
He was born on May 12, 1952 in Moscow, Idaho to parents, Robert V. and Ann Pontius. Ever since he was a little boy, all John ever desired was to serve the Lord in whatever capacity he was called.
He served an LDS mission to South Africa and returned home to BYU when he married the first time and had four beautiful children. John loved living in Alaska for nearly 35 years. After divorce, he married Terri and sealed four more beautiful children into his eternal family. He loves his precious family with a pure and abiding love. They are each his treasure.
John had the sweet and humbling gift of writing with the pen of angels. The Lord gave him an ability uniquely his to express the gospel of Jesus Christ in a simple yet beautiful way. Throughout his life he has touched many thousands of lives through his published books, firesides, and blog (Unblog My Soul). In addition, John's passions included music, playing piano and organ masterfully since a young boy, oil painting, woodworking, conducting choral and orchestra (his favorite being the Mat-Su Alaska Community Messiah, which he did for many years), Christmas, and anything that captivated his mechanical and technical mind.
John passed away on December 10, 2012 from cancer in Saratoga Springs, Utah.

Published statements regarding John Pontius’ standing and support of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:
Published by Terri Pontius in Angels of Fire, April 6, 2020:
“Because there have been unsubstantiated rumors and innuendos circulating in regard to John’s status with and support of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints, I would like to set the record straight as to John’s love of the restored Church, his standing in it, and his full support for its leadership, both past and present.
“Throughout his entire life, John was completely faithful to the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day, Saints, and a member in good standing. He wholeheartedly supported the Church’s positions, doctrines, and those in authority. All of his writings and lectures reflect this."
In the book Journey to the Veil published after his passing in 2013, John wrote:
“I am now and always will be a warrior in defense of the Latter-day Church. Not only is it true, but it works. It brings our lives the very blessings we are seeking…
I think one of the missions of the UnBlog [John's blog] has been to say, over and over that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not broken. It is not somehow true but not functioning, or a kindergarten class one must enroll in, and then graduate from to go beyond.
The voice of the UnBlog is that this Church is profoundly true, that it is operating as Jesus Christ directs, and that it will be the organization through which He finally authorizes and orchestrates the building of the Latter-day Zion.”
